In brief
At least 77 individuals lost their lives in a tragic explosion of a fuel tanker truck in Nigeria after it overturned and spilled its contents.
The incident occurred in the Suleja area of North Central Niger state on Saturday, as authorities reported that people were gathering to scoop up the spilled fuel when the tanker ignited. Emergency services confirmed that approximately 25 others sustained injuries, including some rescuers who rushed to the scene. Such explosions and accidents involving fuel tankers are a recurrent issue in Nigeria, commonly attributed to poorly maintained vehicles and subpar road conditions. Authorities disclosed that those injured are currently receiving medical treatment at nearby hospitals. This incident follows a series of similar explosions in the country; just two weeks prior, another fuel tanker exploded in Delta state, leading to five fatalities, and in October, at least 153 lives were lost during a similar incident involving leaking petrol. The Nigerian government, facing a significant rise in fuel prices—over 400% in the past 18 months—has enacted economic reforms such as the removal of longstanding fuel subsidies. While officials assert that these policies aim to stabilize the economy, many citizens find themselves pushed into poverty, resorting to perilous actions in a bid to survive.
