A suspect in the fatal shooting of prominent Ukrainian politician Andriy Parubiy has been arrested, announced Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The 54-year-old parliamentarian was killed by an attacker posing as a courier in the western city of Lviv on Saturday, leading to a manhunt.

Ukraine's interior minister Igor Klymenko confirmed early Monday that the suspect was apprehended in the western Khmelnytskyi region.

Parubiy gained prominence during Ukraine's Euromaidan protests advocating closer ties with the European Union, which resulted in the ousting of pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych in 2014.

Klymenko stated that the preliminary investigation showed the killing was "carefully prepared," with the politician's travel details mapped out alongside an escape plan.

In a social media update, Zelensky noted discussions with chief prosecutor Ruslan Kravchenko, mentioning the suspect had provided initial testimony. Urgent investigative actions are currently underway to establish all the circumstances of this murder, he said, expressing gratitude for law enforcement efforts.

Unverified video purportedly shows the shooter, disguised as a courier, approaching Parubiy and firing several shots. Lviv police chief Oleksandr Shliakhovskyi reported that the attacker shot approximately eight bullets.

Reportedly, the assailant posed as a Glovo delivery worker. The company expressed shock over the incident and pledged full cooperation with the investigators.

Parubiy served as the speaker of Ukraine's parliament from April 2016 to August 2019 and was a leader of the 2013-14 protests demanding stronger EU ties, organizing self-defense teams to safeguard the protest camp in Kyiv.
