President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that Indiana U.S. Representative Jim Baird and his wife are recovering in the hospital following a serious car accident. Speaking to House GOP members at a retreat held at the Kennedy Center, Trump stated, “They’re going to be okay, but they had a pretty bad accident, and we’re praying that they get out of that hospital very quickly.” Baird, who has been representing west central Indiana since his election to Congress in 2019, is currently 80 years old. A spokesperson for Baird did not respond to inquiries for further information. This incident comes at a time of mourning for Republicans, as they also lament the death of Republican Doug LaMalfa, a long-serving U.S. representative from California. LaMalfa's passing and the resignation of another Republican, Marjorie Taylor Greene, have brought the GOP's control of the House to a narrow 218 seats compared to the Democrats' 213. Historically, vehicle accidents involving officials have had calamitous outcomes; in 2022, Indiana U.S. Representative Jackie Walorski tragically lost her life in a head-on collision, along with two of her staff members and the driver of the other vehicle.
