In brief

The recovery of Nattapong Pinta's body raises the total number of missing and deceased Thai hostages in Gaza to 55, highlighting ongoing concerns for the remaining captives.

Israeli security forces announced the recovery of the body of Nattapong Pinta, a Thai citizen and farmworker, taken hostage during the Hamas-led assault on Israel in October 2023. Pinta, known for his vibrant personality and community ties at Kibbutz Nir Oz, was killed by members of the Mujahideen Brigades in Gaza. The body was retrieved from the Rafah area after the Shin Bet agency gathered intelligence through interrogation of a Palestinian militant. Over the past months, efforts have been made to secure the release of Thai hostages; in a temporary ceasefire in November 2023, 23 were freed, followed by five more earlier this year. Israeli officials believe that two other Thai citizens, Sonthaya Oakkharasri and Sudthisak Rinthalak, are still held captive in Gaza.Gideon Saar, Israel's foreign minister, communicated the recovery operation's details to Thailand’s counterpart, expressing condolences for Pinta's family, which includes a wife and son. Pinta had been working in Israel for more than a year at the time of his abduction and was instrumental in connecting fellow Thai workers with employers, according to Josh Lawson from the Israeli prime minister's office. The Israeli government estimates that 23 of the remaining missing hostages are still alive, stirring ongoing discussions about their fate as the conflict continues.
