Iran claims three of its pilots have been captured by Qatar following two of its fighter jets being downed during a military operation in early March 2026. The Iranian spokesperson, Brig Gen Mohammad Bagherzadeh, says the pilots—Javad Salehi, Abdul Majid Dashtian and Imran Behroshian—were held for six months, while the body of a fourth pilot, Majid Kazemi, was recovered after the crash.
Qatar’s foreign‑affairs spokesperson, Majed Mohammed Al Ansari, has vehemently denied the claims. He said Qatar was "surprised" by the allegations, that the pilots were intercepted only after violating Qatari airspace, and that the nation had taken protective measures in line with international law. He added that Qatar’s search‑and‑rescue teams had exhausted all efforts to locate the pilots’ remains and had coordinated the return of one pilot’s body to Iran.
Bagherzadeh accused Qatar of breaching international law and of preventing the pilots from contacting their families. In a letter to the International Committee of the Red Cross, he demanded the opening of a fact‑finding mission into Qatar, which he says had been denied for months. Al Ansari noted that Qatar had extended an invitation to an Iranian team in April to review its operations, but Tehran had yet to respond.
The dispute adds to tensions in the Gulf region amid ongoing hostilities between the United States and Iran. Both sides continue to urge for diplomacy, though direct talks have not yet taken place.
