In brief
Illegal crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border have plummeted, marking a historic low as many migrants choose to return home rather than attempt the journey north.
The once-thriving border, teeming with migrants seeking refuge, is experiencing a drastic transformation, driven by a combination of former President Trump’s hardline tactics and policies intensified by the previous administration. Recent actions have effectively diminished unlawful entries, reflecting a shifting paradigm in migration that many experts fear may induce fear among families in Central America.According to reports, illegal crossings have declined to their lowest numbers in recent history, causing previously overflowing shelters to empty, as individuals stranded in Mexico opt to head back to their home countries in growing numbers. This shift has decidedly altered the climate of the border, which had, mere years ago, been characterized by tumultuous migration waves.Responding to rising public discontent during the 2024 election campaign, President Biden imposed tighter restrictions on asylum seekers, urging Mexico to bolster its efforts in curtailing migration. His administration witnessed a noticeable reduction in border activity by the end of his tenure, but Trump has since intensified those measures further.Employing a range of hardline tactics, Trump has indefinitely suspended asylum for southern border entrants, dispatched troops to intimidate potential migrants, and made public deportation initiatives, further discouraging crossings. His administration's collaboration with Latin American governments, particularly Mexico, has sought to enforce stricter immigration controls throughout the region.Eunice Rendón, coordinator of Migrant Agenda, noted the eerie transformations under Trump’s reign, warning that “families are terrified” as the entire migration framework appears to be shifting significantly. Critics argue that while such policies may deter migration in the short term, they do not address the fundamental root causes prompting individuals to leave their home countries.
