Russian President Vladimir Putin says he reached understandings with US President Donald Trump over the end of the Ukraine war during their meeting in Alaska last month.
However, Putin did not clarify whether he would agree to peace negotiations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, with Trump reportedly giving a deadline for Putin's response.
Speaking at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in China, Putin defended his actions in Ukraine, attributing the conflict to Western interference.
US special envoy Steve Witkoff indicated that Putin had consented to security guarantees for Ukraine as part of a possible peace agreement, though this remains unconfirmed by Moscow.
In his remarks at the summit, where he also met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Putin expressed gratitude for their support in seeking to resolve the Ukrainian crisis.
Putin emphasized that the understandings reached during his Alaska meeting with Trump could pave the way for peace in Ukraine, while continuing to assert that the crisis originated from a coup supported by the West.
The Russian president has consistently opposed Ukraine's potential NATO membership, asserting that it would exacerbate tensions.
Since Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014, the situation has only deteriorated, culminating in a large-scale invasion in February 2022.
Putin’s comments follow a significant aerial assault on Ukraine, marking one of the most intense periods of conflict to date. French President Emmanuel Macron has warned that failure to respond to Trump's peace initiative may indicate Putin's intentions to stall negotiations.
While Trump has expressed confidence in achieving a swift resolution to the war, his calls for security guarantees for Ukraine have raised further questions about the potential contours of any peace deal.
Despite ongoing advances in diplomacy, Zelensky has voiced skepticism regarding Russia's willingness to engage in genuine negotiations, accusing Moscow of seeking to prolong the war.
