The body of Israeli hostage Ilan Weiss has been recovered in an operation in the Gaza Strip, Israel's military has announced.

Weiss, 56, was killed during Hamas's attack in southern Israel on October 7, 2023, alongside a second unidentified hostage whose remains were also found.

This tragic recovery follows a massive offensive launched by Israel, responding to the initial attack that claimed 1,200 lives and resulted in 251 individuals being taken hostage. According to reports, at least 62,966 Palestinians have died since hostilities intensified.

On the day of the attack, Weiss was actively defending Kibbutz Beeri. His wife and daughter were both captured and released during a ceasefire in November 2023.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog praised Weiss's bravery, acknowledging the family's resilience throughout this traumatic ordeal.

Currently, 48 hostages are believed to remain in Gaza, with many families anxiously awaiting their return as domestic pressure mounts on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government to secure a deal for their release.

Despite calls for negotiations, Israel continues to execute military operations in Gaza, aiming for a strategic takeover of Gaza City, which has raised alarms about the humanitarian consequences for the region's already suffering population.

The Israeli military has ramped up its strikes, insisting that operations in areas where civilians are concentrated will proceed, despite international concerns over the mounting humanitarian crisis.

Eyewitness accounts from Gaza report increasing violence, with one local relative questioning the rationale behind the attacks on civilians, highlighting the devastation faced by families in the area.

The ongoing conflict has displaced over 60,000 residents from Gaza City due to persistent violence, leaving more than 90% of the infrastructure in ruins.
