In brief

An American named Travis Timmerman has been located in Syria after being missing for several months; he recounts his experience of detention under previously held authorities and his unexpected freedom.

A man believed to be an American citizen, Travis Timmerman, was discovered on a main road outside Damascus on Thursday, having reportedly been missing for several months. His plight came to light after he spoke with international media, revealing he had entered Syria on a Christian pilgrimage but was detained during his journey. In a video shared by Al Arabiya, Timmerman confirmed his identity, stating, “That’s right,” when asked if he was Travis Timmerman. The mayor of his discovery location, Al-Thihabiyeh, relayed that the man had been found barefoot and cold but appeared to be in decent health.Timmerman described his detention, saying he received basic necessities like food and water, and mentioned being allowed bathroom breaks three times daily. He indicated that he was held in isolation and that he was liberated when someone broke down the door to his cell. His release coincides with recent shifts in control in Syria, as the former regime led by Bashar al-Assad collapsed over the weekend, prompting mass releases of prisoners. Before Timmerman’s discovery, the Missouri State Highway Patrol had issued a missing person report for him, stating he was last seen in Budapest on May 28. Hungarian police had also sought information about him earlier this year. Timmerman claimed to have spoken with his family just three weeks prior using a mobile phone he managed to keep while imprisoned. After his release, he was trying to make his way toward Jordan but revealed that settling in and finding a safe place to sleep remained his immediate concern rather than processing the reality of his newfound freedom.
