A Nor'easter’s Force Reveals a 140-Year-Old Shipwreck
The powerful nor'easter that battered the eastern seaboard last week has, in an unlikely twist, unearthed a remnant of Nantucket’s maritime past. A beach sweep on Sunday uncovered wooden pieces that analysts believe belong to the Warren Sawyer, a brig that ran aground off Nantucket on November 5, 1884.
Local historian documentation and the National Maritime Museum’s archive list the Warren Sawyer as a 420‑foot schooner that succumbed to the storm after striking shallow sandbars near Great Island. The discovery comes after two separate camps – one in 2022, another in 2023 – recovered scattered timbers along the same stretch, though none could be conclusively tied to the vessel.
The reappearance is a stark reminder of how extreme weather can reshape coastlines. While power outages afflicted more than 160,000 households across New England, the storm’s high winds and rains have also turned buried histories back into the public eye.
