In brief

The geopolitical landscape puts the company's advanced lithography machines under pressure as it tries to maintain its critical role in semiconductor manufacturing.

As the trade war heats up, ASML, a leading Dutch technology firm known for its sophisticated lithography machines used in semiconductor manufacturing, finds itself in precarious waters. The company's CEO, Christophe Fouquet, has recently dealt with political turbulence that significantly impacts their operations. Just last month, President Trump proposed a staggering 50 percent tariff on European products sold in the U.S., which could hike the price of ASML’s machines essential for producing next-generation microchips. However, just days later, the president deferred these tariffs, adding to the already unstable climate for international trade. Compounding the situation, the Dutch foreign minister visited Beijing to discuss the possibility of relaxing restrictions that prevent Chinese firms from acquiring ASML's advanced machines. Meanwhile, the collapse of the Dutch government threatens any ongoing trade discussions, casting further uncertainty over ASML’s future.ASML’s sophisticated lithography machines, which can cost nearly $400 million and measure the size of a train car, are highly sought after by major nations like China and the United States. Their value in the ongoing geopolitical struggles has transformed ASML into a critical player in global trade disputes over technology.Fouquet, who took over the helm of the company valued at $300 billion last year, acknowledges the complexities and uncertainties that arise in this environment. "A large part of it is still out of our hands," he expressed during a recent interview at the company's headquarters in Veldhoven, located approximately 80 miles south of Amsterdam. The outcomes of these geopolitical maneuvers will largely dictate ASML's trajectory in the coming years.
