Moon Marks SpaceX Rocket Debris Impact, KASA Publishes Images

South Korea’s space agency has released striking images from its Danubri lunar orbiter that show a fresh impact on the Moon’s surface after a fragment of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket upper stage collided with it on Wednesday. The orbiter took pictures before and after the incident, allowing scientists to gauge the size and shape of the new crater.
The debris struck the Moon at roughly 06:35 GMT. SpaceX has clarified that the impact was accidental, a reminder that even meticulously engineered missions can leave unintended traces in space.
The Falcon 9 upper stage that impacted the Moon was a reusable section designed to return to Earth after delivering payloads into space. In this case, the 4 000 kg “second stage” drifted into a looping orbit that ultimately directed it toward the Moon at an estimated velocity of 5 400 mph (8 700 km/h).
Astronomers are studying the footage to assess the exact dimensions of the crater, a task that could help refine future orbital debris mitigation. Matt Bothwell of Cambridge warns that the growing amount of space junk could eventually hinder spacecraft operations beyond Earth orbit.
