Nolan Wells' family demands answers on the death of the 18‑year‑old after a boating trip to Horn Island.
Wells went missing on 4 July when he failed to return with friends. Two days later authorities located his body in the water off the unstaffed island. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said no foul play was suspected but called for witnesses to step forward.
Civil‑rights attorney Ben Crump, representing the family, points to conflicting witness statements and has ordered an independent autopsy. An initial post‑mortem was performed earlier, but its results have not yet been released. Dental records confirmed the body was indeed that of Nolan Wells, according to Jackson County Coroner Bruce Lynd.
Wells previously played football at Southwest Mississippi Community College and was described by his coach as a “happy‑go‑lucky kid.” His mother, Christine Wonsley, was the first to alert authorities after her son did not return that evening.
Horn Island, managed by the National Park Service, lacks staff, drinking water, shelters, facilities or communication. The family insists that Nolan would not have chosen to stay alone on the island.
Elmore Wonsley, Nolan’s father, reiterated that “That’s not in his character.” The sheriff’s office released a press statement asking anyone near the island on July 4 to contact them and to submit any original, unedited photos or videos of a possible altercation or images of Wells.
Investigations are ongoing, and the family continues to seek clarity on how the young man ended up alone and why his life was tragically cut short.
