OREM, Utah. (AP) — Authorities announced the arrest of 22-year-old Tyler Robinson on suspicion of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk during a Wednesday event at Utah Valley University.

Kirk, the CEO of Turning Point USA and prominent podcaster allied with former President Donald Trump, was shot shortly after beginning his speech. Described as a leader in remaking the Republican Party’s voter mobilization for the 2024 election, Kirk’s untimely death has raised discussions about free speech and safety on college campuses.

The timeline leading up to the shooting indicates heightened tension: a petition had been circulated to prevent Kirk from speaking the week before, and the university had affirmed its commitment to free speech shortly thereafter.

On the day of the shooting, the suspect reportedly arrived on campus shortly before noon, and within minutes of the event starting, a gunshot was fired from a distance. Emergency calls confirmed Kirk was down, and he was quickly transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

In the hours following the shooting, Robinson was identified as a person of interest after a family member reported him to authorities. He was taken into custody and charged with aggravated murder, among other offenses, which could result in the death penalty if convicted.

The investigation is ongoing as the community grapples with the implications of this violent act against a figure who inspired passionate responses from supporters and detractors alike.
