In a significant shift within the culinary world, the renowned Georges Blanc restaurant, recognized as the oldest Michelin-starred establishment globally, has lost its coveted third star, according to reports from French media. The chef-proprietor, Georges Blanc, now 82 years old, expressed surprise at the decision, stating they "weren't expecting it."
Situated in Vonnas, just outside Lyon, this historic restaurant earned its first Michelin star back in 1929 under the guidance of Georges' grandmother, Élisa Blanc. It has been a staple of the Michelin Guide ever since. Georges took the reins of the restaurant in 1964, initially sharing the role with his mother, Paulette, before becoming the sole owner at just 25 years of age. In 1981, he was awarded the third star, a prestigious mark of excellence that he maintained for over four decades.
Following the recent downgrade, Chef Blanc expressed a willingness to embrace the change, suggesting that with two stars, they might become "less elitist and a little more accessible" to a broader audience. His career, marked by numerous accolades—including France's prestigious Legion of Honour—has seen him dedicate most of his life to maintaining the restaurant's illustrious reputation.
Gwendal Poullenec, director of the Michelin Guide, commented on the decision, emphasizing that it reflects "the evolution of the quality of the restaurant in our rankings." He praised Chef Blanc for transforming what began as a family inn into a gastronomic destination, indicating that the guide will continue to observe and report on the restaurant's journey with both diligence and respect.
In addition to his flagship restaurant, Georges Blanc runs various other dining establishments, hotels, and food shops within the area. The Michelin Guide, originally created by the French tire manufacturer in 1900 to promote road travel and encourage tire sales, introduced its star-rating system in 1926. The annual Michelin star award ceremony is set to take place at the end of this month, further highlighting the importance and intrigue of culinary excellence.
