King Oyo Nyimba, Uganda’s youngest monarch, dies at 34

Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who became king of Tooro at age three and was officially crowned at 18, died after a critical illness while receiving treatment in the United States.

The chief of Tooro, Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, expressed an "immeasurable loss" for Uganda’s royal family and called on citizens to remain united and prayerful during this hard time. He thanked the public for their support and assured that a successor prince would be named in accordance with tradition.

Under Tooro’s hereditary system, the king’s role spans both ceremonial and cultural functions, guiding over two million people. Oyo had been praised for supporting youth empowerment, education, climate conservation and HIV/AIDS awareness, earning recognition from the Guinness World Records as the world’s youngest reigning monarch.

The Buganda Kingdom, the largest traditional institution in Uganda, mourned the loss and described Oyo as a valuable figure who had contributed greatly to Uganda’s cultural life.
