Keiko Fujimori, the 51‑year‑old right‑wing candidate and daughter of former President Alberto Fujimori, was declared the winner of Peru’s presidential election over a month after the runoff vote on 7 June.
She secured 50.135 % of the votes, just 49.865 % for left‑wing challenger Roberto Sánchez, a difference of fewer than 50,000 ballots, according to the country’s electoral court.
Fujimori pledged a vigorous crackdown on organized crime and promised to bring private investment to spur economic growth, while also vowing to expel undocumented immigrants who commit crimes.
Her victory follows a pattern of right‑wing shifts in Latin America, with Colombia, El Salvador, and Ecuador electing comparable leaders in recent years, and comes ahead of the swearing‑in scheduled for 28 July.
