The Benefits of a Full Workweek: A New Perspective on Time

Reimagining the traditional work schedule can alter our perception of time and life satisfaction.

In brief

A recent experience of working an entire week in the office reshapes the understanding of time and fulfillment in our daily lives.

I typically balance my work schedule between three days in the office and two at home. However, due to the need for in-person attendance, I recently worked a full week at the office. To my surprise, rather than feeling exhausted by the extended workdays, I felt a sense of delight. The week seemed interminable, yet I found joy in it, prompting reflection on how we often lament about time slipping away too quickly. With summer approaching, the notion that time is fleeting seems to be echoed by many. My experience that week illustrated how time can stretch, making the days seem fuller and more rewarding. The hybrid work model, which many adopted during the COVID-19 pandemic, initially felt refreshing but increasingly appeared routine. This shift away from my usual hybrid schedule allowed me to notice the richness in the experience of a full week at the office. Some may argue that while they seek to make life feel longer, they actually prefer leisure over an extended work week. In my case, perhaps the extended hours in the office fostered a satisfaction that stemmed from the absence of rushing to complete all tasks in just three days. Excitingly, changing my routine altered my perception of time entirely. The lengthening of the week seemed to derive from the monotony of my usual routine. Despite the appeals for variety, the real advantage of five consecutive office days was the added vibrancy and stimulation they provided. My typical home working days include minimal social interaction and a less fulfilling environment, ultimately leading to days that feel less significant. Conversely, a full week in the office introduced me to a diverse array of individuals during my commute, opportunities for lunch meetings, and engaging after-work events, enriching my daily experiences. Though at times I longed for a little more rest or a slower start to my mornings, the workweek transformed into a canvas filled with opportunities and meaningful interactions, significantly contributing to the quality and satisfaction of my daily life.
