In brief

A new survey has highlighted significant concerns regarding inflation and the cost of living among Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, and Native Hawaiians. Approximately half of adults from these communities desire government action on affordability, with notable increases in their apprehensions surrounding health care costs and economic stability. The findings indicate a growing dissatisfaction with government performance on these pressing issues, reflecting larger national trends.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Anxiety around affordability and inflation are especially pronounced among Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, and Native Hawaiians, according to a recent poll.

About half of Asian American and Pacific Islander adults consulted in the survey expressed a desire for the government to address the rising cost of living, reflecting a growing concern as economic pressures mount. Comparatively, only one-third of overall U.S. adults deemed inflation and financial insecurity as significant issues, according to previous polling.

These findings underscore a segment of the population that's increasingly skeptical about government responses to economic troubles, particularly amidst ongoing inflation. AAPI adults are now more focused on essential issues such as health care and housing than before, with many expressing grave concerns about their economic futures.

Jayakumar Natarajan, a San Francisco Bay Area tech manager, illustrates these worries, noting that rising living costs may compel him to delay retirement plans. “It’s really shaping my perspective on future financial decisions,” Natarajan stated.

The poll, part of a larger effort to understand the diverse perspectives within these communities, also revealed a shift in priorities as health care costs have risen sharply. Nearly half of AAPI adults want health care to be prioritized by the government, indicating a response to escalating medical expenses.

The results signal an urgent need for policymakers to recognize the unease among these communities and address inflation and economic issues with targeted approaches.
