DHL Express has announced that it will suspend deliveries to the United States of any packages valued over $800 (£603) due to a "significant increase" in customs regulations that have come into effect since the introduction of recent tariffs by the Trump administration. Effective Monday, this temporary halt on shipments will apply to all international companies sending goods to American consumers until further notice, while business-to-business shipments will continue but may also face delays.
Previously, the threshold allowed packages worth up to $2,500 to enter the US with minimal paperwork; however, following the recent tightening of customs checks, the limit has now been lowered. DHL stated that this change has resulted in a substantial rise in formal customs clearances, which they are actively managing around the clock.
Despite the suspension of high-value shipments, deliveries under $800 will still be permitted with minimal checks. However, there is an impending crackdown from the White House set for May 2, which will specifically target low-value packages from China and Hong Kong, as it plans to eliminate a loophole allowing these parcels to enter the US duty-free.
Retailers such as Shein and Temu, which cater to budget-conscious consumers, have indicated that they will raise prices due to the shifting global trade regulations and tariffs. The Trump administration has justified these stringent measures by claiming that many shippers in China conceal illicit substances in their shipments. Meanwhile, China has criticized the US stance, asserting that the opioid crisis is an American issue rather than one attributable to China’s stringent drug policies.
Recent developments have seen Hongkong Post halt packages sent to the US by sea, starting April 27, citing that the US is behaving in an unreasonable and bullying manner regarding these tariffs and regulations.
