In brief
In an effort to recover from its recent economic struggles, New Zealand has made significant changes to its visitor visa policy aimed at attracting highly skilled remote professionals, commonly referred to as "digital nomads." This new initiative, officially announced on January 27, 2025, allows these individuals to work remotely for overseas employers while enjoying a stay of up to nine months within the country.
The updated visitor visa policy now permits foreigners to undertake remote work for their overseas employers during their time in New Zealand, a privilege that was previously prohibited. However, it is crucial to note that this visa still prevents holders from taking on jobs with local New Zealand companies, thereby reducing competition for local job seekers. Finance Minister Nicola Willis expressed optimism about the policy, stating, "The visa will open the doors to a whole new category of visitors," and emphasized the government’s intention of positioning New Zealand as an attractive destination for global talent. This policy change comes as New Zealand grapples with the aftereffects of entering recession in late 2024. The government is keen on implementing this strategy as a means to revitalize economic growth and encourage skilled professionals from nations such as the United States and regions in East Asia to visit and possibly relocate.Willis added that marketing campaigns would be rolled out to reach these demographics, ensuring that New Zealand captures the interest of not just professionals but their affiliated companies as well. “We want more of the world’s wealthy and super-talented people,” she declared, indicating a hopeful vision for New Zealand’s economic future amid its current challenges.
