US President Donald Trump has stated he will not allow Benjamin Netanyahu to annex the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Speaking ahead of the Israeli prime minister's address to the UN General Assembly, Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, 'I will not allow Israel to annex the West Bank ... It's not going to happen.'

While set to meet Netanyahu on Monday, Trump also mentioned that a deal regarding Gaza is 'pretty close.'

Israel faces growing pressure internationally to cease its actions in Gaza and continue the occupation of the West Bank, especially as several Western nations formally recognize an independent Palestinian state. Some far-right Israelis see annexation as a means to impede those efforts.

Members of Netanyahu's coalition have been vocal about their desire to outright annex the West Bank. Recently, the UK and Germany have warned Israel against this move, with UN Secretary General António Guterres calling it 'morally, legally and politically intolerable.'

On the same day, Trump reiterated his discussions with Netanyahu and other Middle Eastern leaders, expressing optimism about a Gaza deal and potential peace negotiations.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas addressed the UN General Assembly via video, indicating readiness to collaborate on a peace plan with world leaders.

The situation remains dire, with significant casualties reported in Gaza due to Israeli military actions, alongside increasing calls for the need for humanitarian assistance and an end to hostilities. The recent international backlash has led to a surge in countries recognizing a Palestinian state.
