On the morning of July 10, a 52‑year‑old Mexican migrant, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, was killed at a traffic stop in Houston by ICE agents.
According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the officers were conducting a vehicle stop as part of a targeted enforcement operation. They report that the officer fired the weapon in self‑defence after Salgado allegedly tried to flee—though neither the agent nor the victim was the intended target but to arrest another illegal alien.
Salgado’s family and their attorney dispute that narrative, saying the agent never positioned himself in front of the vehicle or threatened the occupants of the van. They also claim Salgado had no criminal record and was close to obtaining a work permit.
DHS noted that half of its field officers now carry body cameras, and the rest are slated to receive them in the next two months, although the officer involved in the shooting was not wearing one and no footage of the incident has been released.
The incident has sparked protests in Houston and prompted four Democratic members of Congress—Sylvia Garcia, Al Green, Lizzie Fletcher, and Christian Menefee—to demand an independent inquiry into Salgado’s death.
Federal investigators have already opened a probe; the Office of Inspectors General for DHS is examining the shooting, while the FBI in Houston leads an investigation into potential assault on an ICE officer.
In the same week, Mexico’s Foreign Ministry announced it would file criminal complaints over the deaths of more than ten Mexicans in ICE custody in the United States.
Salgado Araujo’s death joins at least eight fatalities during the Trump administration’s immigration operations, with no ICE officers charged to date.
