In brief
The Hamburg trial of Christina Block, heir to a steakhouse empire, has unfolded into a far‑reaching spy scandal. Block is accused of hiring an Israeli security firm to abduct her Danish‑based children amid a bitter custody battle. Claims of involvement by former German and Israeli agents have led to the recent arrest of former German foreign‑intelligence chief August Hanning on treason and espionage charges. The case has stretched across borders, drawing in former Mossad operatives and exposing possible leaks of state secrets. Legal proceedings remain suspended amid witness absences, leaving Germany’s judiciary and security services in a heightened state of scrutiny.
The trial of Christina Block, heir to a popular German steakhouse chain, has evolved into a sprawling espionage controversy that is gripping the nation. Block is accused of ordering an Israeli security team to forcibly abduct her children from Denmark for a cash‑driven custody dispute.
Investigators say that the operation was executed by a 36‑year‑old Israeli citizen, known only as Jonathan G, and a crew of five others. The abduction took place during a New Year fireworks display in late 2023, when the children, aged ten and thirteen, were taken from their father’s Danish home, tied and transported across the German border to an undisclosed location in Baden-Württemberg. Police recovered the children on 2 January 2024 when Block finally appeared to claim them.
Connections to former secret agents have amplified the case. A former German spy chief, August Hanning, was recently arrested on treason and espionage charges after police searching his residence uncovered evidence that he had exchanged classified documents for cash. Hanning, who denied any involvement with the Block case, is alleged to have arranged security staff that later assisted the abduction mission.
Block, her lawyer Andreas Costard, and the Israeli operative Jonathan G face charges of abduction of minors, grievous bodily harm and unlawful detention. Costard’s former partner, TV sports presenter Gerhard Delling, and three others are charged with aiding and abetting. Jonathan G has admitted participation, claiming he believed he was part of a rescue operation.
The legal saga began when Block and Hensel engaged in a prolonged custody battle. After separation, the children remained with Block in Hamburg. Their visits to Hensel in Denmark since 2021 ended abruptly when the youngest two were taken to Denmark against court orders, prompting a Danish court ruling that the children could not be returned. A German court had earlier awarded Block custody, but a Danish ruling complicated matters.
The trial has been repeatedly postponed, most recently because a new witness – Hensel’s current wife – failed to appear in court. Meanwhile, the arrest of Hanning has caused a stir in Germany’s intelligence community and raised questions about the extent of foreign intelligence presence within the country’s borders.
Locals and pundits alike are watching closely as the case could reshape Germany’s approach to both family law and national security. The pending verdict will not only determine the fate of Block and her associates, but may also unravel deeper ties between private individuals and state‑level espionage networks.
