In brief
In a recent social media announcement, President Trump announced a trade agreement with Indonesia that is designed to benefit both nations, while the Indonesian president described the negotiations as challenging but collaborative.
In a high-profile declaration made on Tuesday, President Trump shared that he had successfully brokered a trade agreement with Indonesia, characterizing it as a "great deal for everybody" via a post on social media. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto confirmed the agreement’s general terms during comments made in Jakarta, revealing that U.S. exports will now enter Indonesia without tariffs. In contrast, goods exported from Indonesia to the U.S. will incur a 19% tariff. After months of negotiations marked by intensity, Mr. Prabowo emphasized the understanding achieved between both nations, stating, "We understand their interests, and they understand ours." This announcement occurs at a critical time when the Trump administration is actively seeking to finalize multiple trade agreements globally while considering steep tariffs on the exports of numerous countries unless satisfactory deals are struck before August 1. Prior to this deal, Trump had threatened a significant 32% tariff on Indonesian exports in a letter that surprised Indonesian officials, as discussions had been progressing positively. The president remarked, "I think it’s a good deal for both parties," hinting at further agreements on the horizon, including one with India. He also noted that Indonesia possesses valuable minerals, including high-quality copper, which would be beneficial for U.S. use.
