NORTH CODORUS, Pa. (AP) — Law enforcement was investigating Thursday after a shooting that tragically killed three officers and wounded two others in southern Pennsylvania the day before.
The violence erupted in rural York County as officers were following up on a domestic-related investigation initiated earlier in the week. Authorities confirmed that police killed the shooter in the incident.
Following the shooting, community members formed a procession with American flags, saluting as police and emergency vehicles transported the deceased officers to the coroner’s office. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro expressed his condolences at a news conference, acknowledging the tragic loss of life. Attorney General Pamela Bondi also condemned the violence against police, calling it a scourge on our society. This incident marks one of the deadliest days for Pennsylvania police this century.
Social media platforms saw an outpouring of condolences from various police departments across the region, while individuals left flowers at the Northern York Regional Police Department headquarters.
The investigation is ongoing and involves multiple locations throughout York County, as confirmed by state police. Witnesses reported hearing several gunshots and seeing a massive emergency response, including multiple police vehicles and a helicopter arriving at the scene. The two injured officers are currently in critical but stable condition at York Hospital.
As the community mourns, the families of the fallen officers are also expressing their grief and pride in their loved ones' service to the community, emphasizing the bravery exhibited in the line of duty. The investigation continues as officials work to uncover further details surrounding the events leading to this devastating incident.
