In brief
In Jaramana, armed citizens have taken on the responsibility of safeguarding their community as the government fails to quell rising sectarian violence.
Tensions run high in the Syrian city of Jaramana, where armed residents are mobilizing to provide security amidst ongoing sectarian attacks. Following deadly clashes that resulted in the deaths of seven men, community members expressed frustration with the government's lack of action and have organized to defend their city.On Wednesday, dozens of armed locals, some in traditional Druse attire, were seen patrolling the streets with rifles slung over their shoulders. Their focus was apparent as they manned checkpoints, watching for any potential threats following a violent incident believed to be perpetrated by Islamist extremists. The day was marked by deep mourning as funerals were held for those who lost their lives in the attacks. Grieving families surrounded seven coffins lined up in a Druse religious hall, displaying photos of the victims while a crowd of women wept. Ghassan Azzam, a local resident, articulated the prevailing sentiment: “We’re not seeing anything from the government. We’re just protecting ourselves.”While a few Syrian security force vehicles were spotted in the area, many locals believe that they cannot rely on the government for protection, leading them to take matters into their own hands. With the ongoing violence and the heightened sense of urgency, the residents of Jaramana are determined to defend their lives and their homes amid a precarious security situation.
