In brief
Out-of-control wildfires have created a statewide emergency in Manitoba, Canada, where officials have issued evacuations for around 17,000 residents as fires continue to threaten numerous communities. Premier Wab Kinew emphasized the urgency of the situation during a press conference, advising residents to relocate to urban centers like Winnipeg, which is providing emergency housing and support.
The city of Flin Flon and surrounding First Nations, including Pimicikamak and Mathias Colomb, are under mandatory evacuation orders. Premier Kinew noted that the Canadian military would assist with the evacuations due to the crisis's magnitude. Many of those displaced are expected to find temporary shelter in Winnipeg’s arenas and sports grounds. George Fontaine, Flin Flon’s mayor, confirmed the urgency, stating that residents needed to evacuate by midnight. The fire season has already resulted in fatalities. Earlier this month, two individuals died when they were unable to escape a small town engulfed by flames. Currently, 22 wildfires are burning across Manitoba, with 11 classified as out of control. Notably, the fire near Flin Flon has consumed approximately 50,000 acres, with another fire near Sherridon spreading over 100,000 acres. Premier Kinew reassured the affected citizens that they would be welcomed back and expressed solidarity among Manitobans during this challenging time.
