In brief

In a daring move, London's Metropolitan Police have employed an unconventional tactic by dressing as Batman and Robin to dismantle street scams targeting unsuspecting tourists.

In a remarkable act of crime fighting, officers from the Metropolitan Police in London donned superhero costumes to confront scammers fleecing tourists in the city center. This unusual approach came to light through a video released by the police, where they showcased an undercover operation that took place in February. The footage captures Inspector Darren Watson, disguised as Batman, and Police Constable Abdi Osman as Robin, apprehending a man involved in an illegal gambling operation disguised as a street game near Westminster. In the video, Batman bursts through a throng of tourists on Westminster Bridge, while Robin trails behind him, both in character garb. Their target was a street entertainer running a game resembling the notorious "three-card monte." This game, intended to deceive, involved concealing a ball under one of three shuffled cups, yet the operator's sleight of hand ensured no one could win. The officers quickly apprehended the swindler, handcuffing him and confiscating the rigged game.Metropolitan Police reports reveal that tourists are the prime victims of such scams, often targeted due to their unfamiliarity with local laws regarding street gambling and the tactics of confidence tricksters. In acting decisively, the police hope to deter similar scams which have plagued visitors to the city.
