In brief

Three armed men opened fire at the Piper Arms pub, injuring 12, including six severe cases. The incident has raised concerns about public safety and community fear.

Late on Friday night, a shooting occurred at Piper Arms pub in Toronto, targeting patrons who were enjoying the establishment's opening night. Eyewitnesses and police reported that three masked men entered the venue around 10:40 p.m. and began firing indiscriminately, resulting in 12 individuals suffering varying degrees of injuries.According to Superintendent Paul MacIntyre of the organized crime enforcement unit, six people were hospitalized due to gunshot wounds, while the other six residents sustained injuries from shrapnel, broken glass, or were trampled during the chaos. Fortunately, there were no fatalities, a fact MacIntyre emphasized during a news briefing on Saturday. As detectives examined surveillance footage, they described a scene of pandemonium as patrons dove for cover or attempted to flee to safety. Some sought refuge in the basement of the pub, while others remained on the floor after being hit. The suspects, who carried handguns and an assault rifle, escaped the scene in a vehicle.Upon arrival, law enforcement found a chaotic environment—the pub remained littered with belongings, food, broken glass, and signs of distress. Superintendent MacIntyre noted that the police had not yet apprehended the suspects or determined their motive.Concerns about public safety were highlighted, as MacIntyre admitted it was difficult to reassure the community. “This was a brazen and reckless act of violence that’s really shaken our community and the city itself,” he remarked.Toronto's Mayor, Olivia Chow, described the situation as "deeply troubling" via a social media post and expressed her condolences to those affected. Investigation efforts are ongoing as authorities work to track down the suspects who disrupted what was meant to be a festive evening.
