In brief
Zelensky's recent meeting with Trump and Macron highlights Ukraine's proactive approach in tackling ongoing conflict with Russia, aiming for security assurances and peace negotiations.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently met President-elect Donald J. Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron ahead of the grand reopening of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. This significant event is seen by Ukraine as an opportunity to advocate for its interests to world leaders present at the ceremony. This encounter marks the first face-to-face meeting between Zelensky and Trump since Trump's electoral victory last month. Upon arriving at the Élysée Palace shortly after Trump and Macron's meeting, the leaders posed for photographs ahead of a trilateral discussion. In recent weeks, Ukrainian officials have actively engaged with Trump's incoming administration, hoping to influence plans intended to bring a swift resolution to the war with Russia. However, these proposals remain ambiguous, leading to concerns among Kyiv officials, especially regarding Trump's commitment to potentially allowing Russia to retain some occupied territories as part of a hasty peace.Just this week, a senior delegation from Ukraine, led by Zelensky's chief of staff Andriy Yermak, visited the United States. They met with several key figures in Trump’s administration, including vice president-elect JD Vance and national security adviser pick Mike Waltz. This visit aimed to introduce Yermak as a primary negotiator for Ukraine and assess the forthcoming administration's approach to peace discussions.Ukrainian political analyst Volodymyr Fesenko described the meetings as a preliminary step towards future negotiations, emphasizing a strategic effort to establish a dialogue with U.S. officials. Zelensky's changing stance regarding Russian aggression has caught attention; previously steadfast in the refusal to yield territory, he now implies a willingness to consider concessions in exchange for NATO membership, leading to potential negotiations over re-occupying lost lands. Throughout the year, Zelensky has communicated with Trump on several occasions, expressing a desire for direct collaboration and openness to Trump’s proposals. This ongoing outreach by Ukraine reflects a strategic pivot aimed at securing necessary international support for its forthcoming challenges.
