In brief
Amid heightened tensions with Pakistan, India has come under fire for allegedly deporting Rohingya refugees, with the UN calling for an investigation into these inhumane actions towards vulnerable populations.
The allegations against India have emerged following reports that authorities rounded up Rohingya refugees, forcibly deporting them in acts deemed inhumane by international observers. The UN has called for a thorough investigation into the “credible reports” suggesting that some refugees were pushed into the Andaman Sea—back toward the perilous conditions from which they had fled.Tom Andrews, the UN special rapporteur on human rights in Myanmar, expressed outrage at the claims. “The idea that Rohingya refugees have been cast into the sea from naval vessels is nothing short of outrageous. I urge the Indian government to provide a full accounting of what happened and to refrain from actions that threaten the lives of refugees,” Andrews stated. The Indian government has not yet responded to requests for comments on these accusations. The crackdown on Rohingya refugees appears to coincide with rising tensions with neighboring Pakistan, sparked by India’s accusations of Pakistan's involvement in a recent terror attack that killed more than two dozen Indians. In light of these events, Indian authorities announced a series of punitive measures, including the expulsion of Pakistani citizens. Officials in several Indian states, particularly Gujarat and Rajasthan, have since intensified efforts to round up Muslim populations, many of whom are identified incorrectly as either Rohingya or Bangladeshi immigrants. This troubling trend highlights broader issues of discrimination faced by minority communities in India.
