NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A federal judge on Monday reduced a prison sentence to probation for a former Tennessee lawmaker whose testimony helped convict the former state House speaker and his onetime aide of public corruption. Although her cohorts were pardoned by President Donald Trump, Republican Rep. Robin Smith had been slated to report to prison for an eight-month sentence. However, U.S. District Judge Eli Richardson in Nashville reduced it to one year of probation. Smith was instrumental in securing convictions against Republican ex-House Speaker Glen Casada and his former aide, Cade Cothren, who, alongside Smith, created a company to win taxpayer-funded work. About two weeks after Smith's sentence, Trump pardoned Casada and Cothren, eliminating their prison terms. Smith's attorneys argued that it would be unjust for her to serve prison time while her co-conspirators were pardoned. The U.S. Attorney's Office also supported the shift to probation, noting its rarity in federal cases. Smith continues to seek a pardon from Trump while expressing gratitude for the support she has received during her legal struggles. The judge's reasoning for the sentence change remains sealed. Smith pleaded guilty to honest services wire fraud and previously served as a GOP leader before resigning her seat in early 2022.
