First French Court Links Cosmic Radiation to Flight Attendant Breast Cancer
In Bayonne a French court recognised cosmic radiation as a cause of breast cancer in former Air France stewardess Sophie Lainault, aged 59, who served from 1989 to 2019.
The ruling lists three carcinogenic hazards linked to her occupation: cosmic radiation, passive smoking (Air France flights allowed smoking until 2000) and prolonged night work. Lainault has 12,600 flight hours, more than half at night, often over high‑altitude routes near the North Pole where radiation from space is most intense.
With cancer in remission, Lainault can now retire early and receives full medical coverage from the French health system. The verdict also means other airline staff can seek similar recognition and compensation under the occupational disease framework.
A Harvard Medical School study published this month reported that pilots and flight attendants have the highest radiation‑related cancer death rates among more than 500 professions, with 6.9% of death cases in attendants and 6.7% in pilots attributed to radiation. Radiation protection guidelines treat even small doses as potentially oncogenic, with higher exposure near the poles due to the Earth’s magnetic shield.
Professor Jim Smith of the University of Portsmouth explained the difficulty of tying an individual cancer case to radiation yet noted a small incremental risk for air crew. Lawyer Elisabeth Leroux said this is the first time an air hostess’s case has been officially accepted as occupational disease, encouraging other women to pursue claims.
Air France stated it had not supported Lainault’s legal case but underlined that “the health and security of our staff is an absolute imperative” and that every employee receives medical care beyond regulatory minimums.
