The first days of July in Europe have revealed a new, more intense climate, marked by successive heatwaves that have broken decades‑old records. In June, the UK experienced the strongest heat wave since 1976, with temperatures capping at 37.7 °C in Lingwood, Norfolk—an increase of 6°C over the previous record.

Europe’s heat dome wasn’t confined to the UK. Across central, western and eastern countries, stations recorded June highs that exceed previous bests by 2–3 °C, with Hungary and the Czech Republic each reaching more than 41 °C—novel highs for the month and, in some cases, the warmest measured temperatures in those nations’ histories.

The intensity of the June surge is underscored by 5‑to‑7 days of tropical nights—days when temperatures stay above 20 °C overnight—in most of England, Wales and large parts of southern France and the Iberian Peninsula. These nights, which were once rare, hint at the normalising trend of longer, more oppressive warm spells driven by the planet’s warming air.

A strong match has also warmed Europe’s seas. Maps of sea surface temperatures show almost all oceanic zones—especially the North Sea, the English Channel and the Mediterranean—recorded June temperatures two degrees or more above the 1993–2022 average. Warm seas prolong the heatwave by reducing the cooling effect of sea breezes.

Climate scientists attribute this new ‘record‑breaking’ climate to greenhouse‑gas‑driven warming. Professor Stephen Belcher of the UK Met Office notes that human‑induced climate change has made “events like this more likely and more intense”, adding that “the only way to explain the temperature spikes is to take the long‑term warming into account”.

While future heatwaves may not beat June’s record in absolute terms, the London‑based data show that June 2026’s 30 °C threshold—a standard for “hot” months—has been hit in nine of the last ten years, compared to just 12 occurrences in the last four decades. The trend suggests that each successive summer will likely be hotter and that temperatures will continue to climb until global net‑zero greenhouse gas emissions are achieved.

For residents of the UK and Europe, the takeaway is clear: the new climate is hotter, and adaptation must include early evacuation plans, better heat‑safe buildings, and public health monitoring. With the sea and air warming already, scientists warn that even higher temperatures – beyond the current 40 °C threshold – are coming if the carbon‑emission trajectory isn't altered.
