In brief
Over the weekend, South Korean officials reported that nearly 30 wildfires erupted in the southeast, leading to the deaths of four people and injuring six others. The National Interior Ministry disclosed that firefighters and helicopters were deployed to combat 29 fires that ravaged approximately 4,700 acres, displacing around 1,000 residents and causing service interruptions across transportation networks.
By Sunday morning, a state of disaster had been declared in various parts of the affected region. Reports indicated that most of the fires were extinguished, although six remained active. The fatalities and injuries were primarily associated with a fire in Sancheong County, approximately 160 miles from Seoul, ignited by a lawn mower incident, with two fallen firefighters among those deceased.Additionally, separate fires broke out in Euiseong County and Gimhae, heightening the urgency for a robust firefighting response. Local officials noted that dry and blustery conditions in March, April, and May contribute significantly to the ease of fire spread, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration. Fire crews are optimistic about controlling the remaining blazes soon, as they continue to battle the ongoing crisis in the region.
