In brief
At least three individuals have lost their lives following a devastating fire on the KM Barcelona 5, a passenger ship, in Indonesian waters, with over 200 passengers on board. Rescue operations are ongoing as authorities work to determine the cause of the blaze.
On Sunday morning, the KM Barcelona 5 was making its way from the Talaud Islands to Manado, the capital of North Sulawesi province, when the fire erupted near Talise, according to Vice Adm. Denih Hendrata of the Indonesian Fleet Command. Various sources, including local news outlets, report that around 280 people were on board when the incident occurred.Images captured from videos released by Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency (BASARNAS) depicted a rescue ship approaching the beleaguered vessel, with thick black smoke rising ominously from its side. Footage shared on social media revealed passengers in life jackets, while others were evacuated from the ship and transported to safety aboard rescue boats.Authorities have not yet confirmed the total numbers of rescued individuals, injuries, or those still unaccounted for. Rescue efforts are being bolstered by at least two ships alongside additional inflatable vessels. The cause of the fire remains unknown, and it is unclear who operates the KM Barcelona 5.Such incidents are not uncommon in Indonesia, an extensive archipelago with more than 17,000 islands where maritime transportation is a frequent mode of travel. Earlier this month, another ferry tragedy claimed the lives of at least five people and left 29 missing when the KMT Tunu Pratama Jaya sank en route to Bali.
