In brief

Dussehra, celebrated by millions across India, blends dramatic retellings of the Ramayana with elaborate processions. In the North, Ramlila performances culminate in the bonfire of Ravan’s effigy, while in the East and West, Durga Puja tents honor the goddess’s triumph over demons. Carnivals, food stalls and traditional dances turn cities into vibrant celebrations, and the festival also marks the start of Diwali preparations.

Millions flock to temples, markets and open streets across India to mark Dussehra, the festival that celebrates the triumph of righteousness over evil.

In the north and centre the day opens with Ramlila, a dramatic re‑enactment of the epic Ramayana. Actors dress as Lord Ram, Sita, Ravan and other characters; crowds chant, the air smells of incense and, at sunset, massive effigies of the ten‑headed king are carried to the bonfire and set alight, symbolising the defeat of tyranny.

On the same day in the east, wing of India and Bangladesh people light lamps in Durga Puja pandals, the elaborate tents that house idols of the goddess. The idols, often weeks rehearsed, depict Durga slaying the buffalo demon Mahishasura, echoing the same moral of good conquering bad.

Across the country the streets bustle with food stalls, rides and folk dances—from the rhythmic Garba of Gujarat to the colourful street rallies of Bengaluru—making Dussehra a carnival‑like spectacle that welcomes the festive season ahead of Diwali.

The festival follows the lunar calendar, falling on the tenth day after nine nights of Navratri, a period of devotion and celebration, and serves as a cultural touchstone for millions who celebrate diversity as unity in a shared triumph of light over darkness.
