In brief
Narges Mohammadi, renowned human rights advocate and recent Nobel Peace Prize recipient, has been temporarily released from prison to recover from surgery as her health continues to decline.
Iran's government has granted Narges Mohammadi, the acclaimed activist and 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, a temporary release for 21 days to recuperate from leg surgery, as confirmed by her foundation this Wednesday. Mohammadi's legal team had long advocated for her release due to deteriorating health, exacerbated by a procedure to remove a potentially cancerous lesion last month. In a show of solidarity, Mohammadi's fellow inmates had initiated a hunger strike demanding her release amidst worries for her wellbeing. Upon her return to prison, the conditions will dictate an extension of her sentence by 21 days, according to her foundation’s statement. This delay is a result of a denial for a "medical furlough" that would have allowed for recovery time without additional penalties. At 52 years old, Mohammadi is currently serving her sentence in Tehran after facing charges related to spreading anti-government propaganda, largely stemming from her outspoken critiques of Iran's regime and the restrictions placed on women's rights. Her situation has raised significant concerns as she reportedly suffered multiple heart attacks while incarcerated in 2022. The Nobel Peace Prize, awarded to her in 2023, was accepted by her children in her honor, highlighting her impactful legacy despite her imprisonment.
