A Dutch‑sponsored tourist coach overturned on a narrow mountain road in the Graubünden region of the Swiss Alps, killing five passengers and injuring more than 40, Swiss police said.
The vehicle struck a safety barrier in a roadworks area, left the roadway and tipped between Susch and Zernez late on Thursday afternoon.
Rescue crews from Switzerland and Austria flew seven helicopters and brought ambulances to transport the injured to hospitals; three people were seriously hurt.
The coach had departed the Netherlands on Monday for a day‑trip to Switzerland from Austria, carrying a group of Dutch nationals.
Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten expressed his condolences, while King Willem‑Alexander and Queen Máxima sent their thoughts to the victims’ families.
Swiss President Guy Parmelin posted on X that he was deeply shocked and offered sincere condolences to the families of the victims.
Investigators from the Graubünden public prosecutor’s office and police are probing the circumstances that led to the crash.
Zernez, the northern gate to the Swiss National Park, lies along the route where the accident occurred.
