Guo Wengui sentenced to 30 years in U.S. jail
Former Chinese property magnate Guo Wengui—known in the U.S. as Miles Guo—has been handed a 30‑year prison sentence after a federal jury found him guilty of racketeering, fraud and money laundering.
Guo fled China in 2017, positioning himself as a critic of the Communist Party and building a large online following among U.S. Chinese communities. Prosecutors report that between 2018 and 2023 he raised more than $1bn from supporters involved in investment and cryptocurrency schemes.
The money allegedly funded a luxurious lifestyle: a 50,000‑square‑foot mansion, a $1m Lamborghini and a $37m yacht. Guo denied the allegations, claiming the funds were for political activism.
Judge Analisa Torres noted that “Guo preyed on those seeking to bring democracy to China,” and that his lavish consumption came at the expense of victims’ trust.
U.S. Attorney Sean S. Buckley said the case demonstrates that “fame and wealth do not place you above the law, and fraudsters who victimize families to enrich themselves will face significant consequences.”
Guo’s case also highlights his ties to prominent anti‑CPC figures, notably former Trump adviser Steve Bannon, who was once on his yacht. Bannon’s own controversial entitlement and fraud charges, and his 2020 intervention on behalf of a pro‑border wall organisation, have drawn scrutiny.
