CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Community leaders, officials, and activists in Charlotte are preparing in response to a planned federal immigration operation. Describing it as an invasion, they have urged residents to protest peacefully and document the actions of agents from a distance.

Mecklenburg County Commissioner Susan Rodriguez-McDowell emphasized the surreal climate under the current administration, likening it to previous events that caused public uproar. The operation has been confirmed by Sheriff Garry McFadden, who indicated that U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents would likely begin enforcement actions soon.

State Rep. Jordan Lopez voiced concerns about the past operations in other cities, highlighting disturbing encounters involving law enforcement officers and ordinary citizens. The potential for similar encounters in Charlotte has prompted significant anxiety among residents, especially in communities with large immigrant populations.

Local organizations like Action NC are actively preparing residents for the operation, offering training on how to document potentially unlawful actions by federal agents during enforcement sweeps. Héctor Vaca, a director at Action NC, described the impending federal sweep as part of a “racist campaign of terror.”

Despite the heightened tensions, local officials have reported no formal notification from the Trump administration regarding the immigration operation. Charlotte, a hub with a diverse immigrant population, has rallied around measures to protect its residents, emphasizing the importance of community solidarity.

Council member-elect JD Mazuera Arias pledged that local resources would not fund any immigration enforcement efforts, voicing the need for compassion rather than fear in handling issues related to undocumented immigrants. Cameron Pruette from the Freedom Center for Social Justice called for solidarity with immigrant-owned businesses while encouraging peaceful action. As tensions rise, Charlotte stands together against what they see as intimidation tactics from the federal government.
