Omer Shem Tov, now back at home, has shared his extraordinary experience of survival after being taken hostage during the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. As he navigated through the harrowing days of captivity, he found solace in his Jewish rituals and prayer.
Each morning, his mother, Shelly Shem Tov, would enter her son's empty bedroom to recite Psalm 20, a prayer for deliverance, unaware that her son was echoing these very verses while confined almost 130 feet underground in a Hamas tunnel.
At just 20 years old, Omer was snatched from a life of carefree dreams and aspirations, including his plans for a post-military trip to South America. The attack occurred during the Nova music festival, a rave near the Gaza border, where he was attempting to flee the chaos.
Amidst the darkness and isolation, Omer began to converse with God, making promises and giving thanks for the meager meals provided to him. His rituals became a lifeline, instilling a sense of purpose and connection amid the uncertainty of his situation.
