In brief

Reform U.K. has raised £4.75 million, pulling in conservative donors and building momentum against traditional parties, soon facing local elections.

Nigel Farage’s Reform U.K. party is witnessing a significant uptick in its fundraising efforts due to the support of over a dozen donors who previously aligned with the Conservative Party, as analyzed in new data from campaign finance records. This shift highlights the growing threat that Reform U.K. poses to the Conservative establishment, drawing inspiration from the populist movements reminiscent of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s MAGA approach. In 2024, Reform U.K. raised an impressive £4.75 million (approximately $6.1 million), a stark contrast to the minuscule figure of less than $200,000 reported in 2023. Notably, a substantial one-third of these funds originated from former Conservative backers. An analysis conducted by The New York Times of Reform U.K.’s donations to the nation’s campaign finance authorities revealed significant contributions, particularly in the final quarter of the year. The largest single donation of £100,000 was made in December by Roger Nagioff, a former Conservative donor with a history in investment banking. Additionally, major contributions included £1 million from a firm linked to Reform’s deputy leader, Richard Tice, and £500,000 from philanthropist Fiona Cottrell. The exodus of financial support from the Conservative base began following Farage’s ascension to the leadership of Reform U.K. just before Britain’s general election in July.Farage, known for his anti-establishment stance and far-right views that resonate with many in the nationalist movement, is aiming to redefine British conservatism with a platform focusing heavily on anti-immigration and populist ideals. Recent polling indicates a surge for Reform U.K., which has now surpassed the Conservative Party, and their success has extended to securing seats in municipal elections. Although a general election isn’t slated for the governing Labour Party until 2029, the robust fundraising achievements signify Farage's escalating momentum as his party prepares to confront established parties in the forthcoming local elections this May.
