At about 07:00 local time, a recreational vessel carrying 95 people—including passengers and crew—took to the waters of Lake Kariba, a massive reservoir between Zimbabwe and Zambia. According to police, the boat had a capacity of 90 passengers and 5 crew but may have been overloaded; ticket sales recorded 114 adults on board, and children who were not ticketed may have also been aboard.
Witnesses report that the vessel left in the early morning despite a storm, and a large wave appears to have struck it, forcing it to capsize. The incident has triggered an extensive rescue operation, with search teams combing the lake for survivors and felling bodies.
Lake Kariba is a critical waterway for both Zimbabwe and Zambia, supporting transport, fishing, and hydroelectric power generation. The boat’s sinking, therefore, carries broad implications beyond the immediate loss of life.
“We have very hard questions that require honest answers. The officials must release the correct number of people who were onboard,” a local Member of Parliament, Mutsa Murombedzi, said in a tweet. She posted a video of the vessel at the start of its journey, noting that residents use the boat to cross the lake to Kariba town – a trip that takes about five hours.
The Civil Protection Unit has announced that details on the numbers who have perished and who have been rescued will be released as soon as possible. In the meantime, authorities remain on high alert while the lake’s depths continue to conceal the disaster’s full impact.
