In brief
Bashar al-Assad, who ruled Syria with an iron fist for over two decades, has fled the capital under the veil of secrecy as rebel forces intensified their approach.
As rebel movements gained momentum toward Damascus on December 7, 2024, the atmosphere within the Presidential Palace was tense but outwardly focused on a planned address from President Bashar al-Assad. Staff prepared a speech aimed at presenting a pacifying power-sharing initiative with opposing political factions in hopes of quelling the 13-year civil war.Despite the critical situation, those close to the president noted he exhibited little unease during the preparations. Security measures were claimed to be reinforced, especially by the formidable 4th Armored Division led by Assad’s brother, Maher al-Assad. However, unbeknownst to his aides, the president had orchestrated a deception.Under the cover of darkness, Bashar al-Assad covertly departed from the capital, with initial reports indicating he traveled first to a Russian military installation in northern Syria. Subsequently, he boarded a Russian aircraft headed to Moscow. Meanwhile, Maher al-Assad and high-ranking military officials hastily escaped to Iraq, their whereabouts now shrouded in uncertainty. This turn of events signals a chaotic reconfiguration of power in Syria, leaving many questions regarding the future governance and stability of a nation embroiled in conflict for over a decade.
