The story occurred against the backdrop of an intensifying war in Iran that began on 28 February, when the United States and Israel launched joint air strikes. Reports emerged of Iranian state TV calling the team “traitors” for their silence during the anthem. Human rights campaigners warned that the returning players may have been coerced under threat to relatives.
Australia’s immigration policy is under scrutiny, amid proposals to tighten visa conditions, especially for asylum seekers, by limiting work rights and banning visitor‑family visa applications. The naturalisation of the two athletes, who are now training with the Brisbane Roar Women’s squad, highlights the intersection between sport, political asylum and policy reform.
