In brief

Israeli law enforcement has arrested seven individuals for planning to assassinate a senior scientist and a city mayor, allegedly with Iranian backing. The suspects, from the Beit Safafa neighborhood, sought financial rewards for their actions.

Israeli authorities announced on Tuesday the apprehension of seven residents from predominantly Arab Beit Safafa in East Jerusalem. The individuals are accused of plotting assassinations on behalf of Iran, specifically targeting a high-ranking Israeli scientist and the mayor of a major Israeli city. Details regarding the identities of the scientist and mayor have not been disclosed.According to a statement released by the Israeli police and Shin Bet intelligence agency, the suspects were arrested in recent weeks but have not yet been formally indicted. The investigation revealed they had taken photographs of the scientist's residence as part of their assassination preparations. The group also intended to detonate a police vehicle and threw a grenade at a residential property, all for a potential reward of approximately $50,000.While minimal information about the suspects has been released, one identified individual, a 23-year-old Israeli citizen, is said to have recruited the group. They received instructions to engage in actions such as spraying graffiti in a different district of Jerusalem, setting vehicles on fire, and gathering intelligence, although the specific rationale behind their chosen targets remains unclear. This announcement follows a recent report of another Iranian-linked espionage network, which included seven Jewish Israelis reportedly collecting intelligence for Iran. It remains uncertain when both groups were arrested, or the reason behind the simultaneous revelation of these espionage operations. The Israeli government has made clear its intent to retaliate against Iran following a drone and missile strike aimed at Israel on October 1. Direct hostilities between Israel and Iran escalated in April 2024, marking a new phase in a longstanding covert conflict.Reports from Iran's state news agency, IRNA, have yet to address these allegations or provide any official response to the claims made by Israeli authorities. The area in which the suspects reside, part of East Jerusalem, was captured by Israel from Jordan during the 1967 war and has since been annexed. While Israel views Jerusalem as its undivided capital, the majority Palestinian population holds aspirations of establishing it as the capital of a future Palestinian state, a claim recognized by the UN Security Council, which regards it as occupied territory. In addition to this case, Israeli police have recently indicted a man linked to plans for an attack during a demonstration supporting hostages held in Gaza, although further specifics on that situation have not been disclosed.
