A flood emergency has been declared across Bangkok after two days of relentless rainfall left the city’s streets and canals under water.

Officials warned residents to stay indoors and move belongings to higher floors, especially those living near the network of Khlongs that have burst their banks.

The deluge has overwhelmed Bangkok’s drainage infrastructure, causing traffic chaos on an already congested urban grid.

Meteorologists predict the rain will continue into Sunday, with fears that more canals could overrun and spread flooding further across the 50 districts.

Somkid Pheuk‑ngam, 67, recounted that water reached her waist in a shop, forcing its closure after two days. She said the situation looks worse than the nationwide floods of 2011. Fortunately, there have been no casualties in Bangkok so far.

The city governor, Chadchart Sittipunt, said the eastern districts were hardest hit and that pumps were working but canals remain full.

City officials are working to relieve pressure, but residents must remain cautious as the storm system moves toward central Thailand.
