Portugal is in mourning after 16 people died and a further 23 were injured when Lisbon's famous Glória funicular cable railway derailed on Wednesday evening.

Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro told a news conference on Thursday the number was revised down after emergency services had put the toll at 17.

Among the dead were seven men and eight women, Margarida Castro Martins, head of Lisbon's Civil Protection Agency, said.

Five of those killed were Portuguese, while nationals from Britain, South Korea, Canada, the U.S., Ukraine, Switzerland, and France were also among the deceased, according to police.

Police have not yet confirmed the identities of those who died, but some have been named elsewhere. Here is what we know about them.

André Jorge Gonçalves Marques

Mr. Marques, a brake guard on the funicular, was among the dead, the Portuguese transport union Sitra reported. The union extended condolences to families affected.

Employers Carris described him as a dedicated and kind professional. He leaves behind a wife and two children.

Pedro Manuel Alves Trindade

Another victim named was Pedro Trindade, a former volleyball referee. The Portuguese Volleyball Federation expressed deep sadness over the loss.

Mr. Trindade worked for the Santa Casa da Misericórdia organization, which confirmed that several of its employees died in the crash.

Other Victims

Three additional Santa Casa employees were also killed, and one was identified as lawyer Alda Matias. Employees shared their shock and grief over the tragedy.

A German family was also involved, with reports indicating the father initially declared dead found alive later. The mother remains in critical condition.

Emergency services continue to treat those injured, with several still hospitalized. The UK Foreign Office is assisting families of the victims from Britain, while the Ukrainian Ministry confirmed one of its citizens was among the dead.

The cause of the crash remains unclear, with investigations ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
